BLOG #3

As they grown older, Pip and Estella have different realizations that have immediate impacts on their progression. Pip has realized that he is not living up to his expectations because he is way to focused on Estella. Even though he has become aware of this , he can't help him self. Because of this obsession, he is now stressed out all the time and has been turning hostile towards Drummle and all the others who are fascinated by Estella. Estella has realized that Miss Havisham has turned her cold and mean. In chapter 38 Estella and Miss Havisham start to argue because Estella gets fed up with Miss Havisham and her ways. She becomes aware that Miss Havisham is like a puppeteer and that Estella was her puppet. The immediate result was her no longer being in good terms with Miss Havisham, and that she is aware of how she treats Pip differently from the other men that love her. These realizations will being them together. Pip will see how he will be miserable for the rest of his life unless he can be with Estella permanently. Estella will see how even after all of her cold and mean insults that were trying to throw Pip off her trail, that Pip stuck with her and that she in fact actually likes him as well. Although these realizations have immediate negative impacts, they will come through in the end, bringing Pip and Estella together at last.

  1. I qualify your blog post because I agree that Estella's realization occurs during her argument with Ms. Havisham but do not agree that Pip is not living up to his expectations because he is too focused on Estella. I disagree with Pip's obsession of Estella as his realization because Pip's realization happens when he finds out that the convict is his benefactor. "I relinquished the intention he had detected, for I knew him!...I could have known my convict more distinctly than I knew him now, as he sat in a chair before the fire"(316). When Pip finds out who his real benefactor is, he is the most surprised person. This is the climax of the story and from this event Pip goes in a different direction with his life. Pip knew Estella since he started his great expectations. Estella changed Pip's expectations a little bit, but did not change them as much as finding out his real benefactor.

  2. I disagree with you amy. Pip does realize that he is obsessed with Estella. When Estella says that Pip is not her true love, Pip is crushed. Afterwards, Pip keeps trying to win Estella back. So I think that Pip's obsession is Estella.

  3. I have to disagree. It is not so much that Pip thinks he isn't living up to his expectations, He discovers he has no expectation. The discovery of his unwanted benefactor lifts a veil from his eyes where he sees the reality of the matter with Miss Havisham and Estella. His pursuing of Estella slowly ceases after he sees he was never meant to be with her. His life has shattered and it isn't his actions that caused it, it was his perception. He never saw Estella as cold until after the veil was lifted.
